Oyr cellphones is on GSM 900 is from Canada to South America and is cut off from the globe. Other countries can use analog and digital cellphones
@user_laer4yugatsuj 2024-02-21T12:44:45Z
To have the star tac come back with a small oled screen in place that could do basic stuff like a partially smart phone would be awesome, or just even smart enough. OR even just really good text and calls, AND have hotspot. thats all i need. Im great with t9 texting. AND without that darn bulky antennae... https://youtu.be/pMJSAKSX_L8

As of today 11/14/23 I still have my startac it cost me $ 875.00 in 1996. Lord I had to work for it.. it's with me full of memories in my head .

@user_dasorter 2023-07-13T19:41:32Z
Fun fact: the first "camera phone" photo to be taken, was done with a startac plugged into a camera

I remember the fist the MicroTac which was IMMENSELY popular, then the Startac came out it was like an advanced miniature version of it. Everyone wanted one. Ok they were both analog, for use on the Advanced Mobile Phone System. It was in the late 90s that there was a huge push by the providers to switch to digital networks like CDMA and PCS because of huge security flaws and bandwidth limitations of AMPS. But what this caused was a big step backwards in the designs of the phones themselves, because the circuitry was more complicated and power hungry. So it was back to "bricks" for a little while. That's why the v60 and v3 were such huge hits when they came out in the early 2000s. Because the technology had avanced enough to make small packaging possible again, and they were seen an homage to the Startac that they took away a few years before.
@user_4841dneifylrobhgien 2023-05-21T06:20:25Z
Anyone remember the startac vader? Identical to the startac but half the size. When phones were always getting smaller. Now they just keep getting bigger and bigger!
@user_4841dneifylrobhgien 2023-05-21T06:07:29Z
I had the startac with led screen, the slim lith battery and the big ol piggy back battery LOL. I loved that phone!
@user_t3EkSt33L 2023-04-28T21:07:47Z
I can’t remember clearly cause I was only 5 at the time but my Uncle had a Startac and I think he bought me one of those calculators to play with.
I have a motorola startac i dont know the model but the battery is a Nickel Metal one and it does not hold a charge and the display is messed up im trying to get a working one off of ebay or other websites that sells old vintage tech like this.
@user_1691AICehTtoN 2023-03-28T18:25:44Z
I vaguely remember having a toy flip phone, and every memory I can conjure up I think it was a copycat of this phone... Fun trip.
@user_ssssacvvL 2023-03-04T21:38:32Z
This was one of 2 mobile phones in my life (along with massive Alcatel HC800) that required a FULL SIZED sim card shoved up theirs... Like the credit card sized one, which you now pop the mini/micro/nano sim out of.
@user_1588abocaj 2023-02-15T04:52:11Z
Lets not forget that, Motorola then is not the same company as Motorola now. Chinese lenovo makes Moto phones now..
I use to have a star Tac I liked it was small and easy to carry not like cell phones now, But the only issue I had with the Star Tac was that the big tip of the antenna breaks off if you don't take really good care of it.
@user_inidlabula 2022-12-07T17:26:07Z
Here in Costa Rica in 90 years mobiles was only form doctors , lawyers architects,it was very expensive
@user_nivalSkraM 2022-11-11T12:13:32Z
I work for a UK network, back before 3G was a thing, we were shown a "possible future" of the things that 3G could bring. One was a kid in a store picking clothes, video calling their parent to show them and the parent inserting their credit card into a red StarTAC (I think it took a credit card sizes SIM) to pay for their shopping remotely.

@user_0933rehciepsnitsud 2022-11-03T02:42:29Z
Actually, Verizon wasn't even around yet when the Star Tac was introduced. This was my very first phone I got at 12 year's old, & my service was with Air Touch Wireless which eventually merged with Vodafone to create the juggernaut we know today as Verizon Wireless. Can you hear me now? Good.
@user_32locttocs 2022-11-01T06:38:39Z
That clip on PDA was just a Franklin/Roladex REX organizer. I had one back in the day and immediately recognized the interface. The REX was built into a laptop PCMCIA card. making it about the size of a credit card. And to sync it with a pc you just popped it into a win95 laptop or into the doc that connected via serial port to a desktop pc. The thing was WAY ahead of its time for sure. Never knew it was adapted fot the StarTAC
@user_7286ajiahsumleunamme 2022-10-02T21:37:48Z
How can I find this elite phone STARTAC
@user_reveroferutlucpop 2022-10-01T10:01:17Z
Whenever I see videos about any old Motorola cellular device, I immediately remember some of the fondest memories with my father. I remember teaching him how to send SMS using his phone and how we compare our phones (I owned a Nokia during the time). Motorola was the only brand of cellular he ever owned. I miss my father everyday, and 11 yrs after he passed, I still smile whenever I see a Motorola phone, let alone watching videos about the brand.
@user_2891evaRnabrU 2022-08-11T07:37:57Z
In Sweden we can still use those old ass phones on 2G network. I love it.
@user_6987trachtacluap 2022-07-31T10:17:36Z
My friend was a security guard at the Scottish Motorola buildings.
@user_9221sslm 2022-07-28T01:11:51Z
Actually the design was quite impressive for its time
@user_owt10001noot 2022-07-06T22:11:57Z
I work at a factory about 10-15 miles away from the Scottish Motorola factory mentioned in the video, and as managers tend to do many of my current managers have employment history at that specific plant. (My current manager's father was one of the higher ups there). I have heard stories from them about the Harlequin StarTAC's creation; they really did just want to see if it was possible and, more importantly, if it would even look cool, and in traditional scottish fashion they just made it anyway. It's funny knowing such important mobile history was that close to home.
@user_9991smaerddnuorapiuQ 2022-06-21T22:43:19Z
you'd think in this current trend of 'Retrofit" and 'Restoration" someone would've found a way to mod a phone like this to work on something as new networkwise like 4g or even 5g. i also vaguely remembered my grandfather who was a lawyer in 2002 was still using a startac then. and i also just bought two of these for display pieces and photo subjects.
@user_30189oatoat 2022-06-13T01:44:41Z
Although I didn't own the original Star TAC, I did own the MOTOROLA V8088 which is a new smaller version of the original star TAC. it's got only 3 lines of LCD text, but I was able to use it to send and receive MSN messenger on it and to check my hotmail. I was even able to check the mobile web to check movie showtime. People were impressed by what I could do with it. Then I also owned Motorola A1600, it not only had a 3MP camera, it also had a 2.4-inch touch screen and can be used as a PDA phone. It even came with a stylus.
@user_30189oatoat 2022-06-13T01:25:19Z
I really like the original star tac. At the time, whoever gets it, sure gets the stare. I wanted one, but couldn't afford one. I hate the bigger battery version which made it look ugly because the cover of the phone is supposed to be flush with the rest of the design, not a bulge.
@user_bburtrrad 2022-06-09T23:36:15Z
I’ll never forget all the fools walking around with these things around their necks 😂 Proud to say I recognized how ridiculous they were when they came out.
@user_ohcnimyn 2022-06-05T03:40:12Z
I had one in 96, I was able to email with this 😆 this is why the Iphone is useless.
@user_RENFEHMELRAH 2022-06-05T01:09:40Z
That star tac phone and Motorola 2 way pager. Omg, it was a match made in heaven; you had to be there.
@user_5994divadnairpic 2022-06-02T11:01:08Z
I just heard this replica: I'll bend you like a startac... and here i am see what is a StarTAC lol
@user_3249sgnirjh 2022-05-20T16:14:33Z
I am very glad living in europe e.g. germany because the gsm network is still alive co existing with 4 and 5 g. Therefore even though the star tac 130 was a single band gsm device every now and then I take it out of the draw and sign it on to the network. Still possible and legal…
@user_9444kevets 2022-05-10T20:49:12Z
Ya have to do a review on the truckers bag phone called the Highway Master!
@user_0683retniopllun 2022-05-04T13:15:09Z
The first version had an alphanumeric dot matrix display, it wasn't until they introduced the digital version that featured a backlit lcd display. Even after the launch of the first model some time later they launched an "economical" version with a numerical display of segments.
@user_1t8wjt 2022-04-24T21:35:41Z
Me being a old watercooled VW fan, without even seeing the Harequin Golf/Polo reference, that's what it totally reminded me of when you first showed them in the video.
I remember selling those when I worked for At&T wireless back in the day.

Motorola deserves an award for this, the best phone of all time. I enjoyed every bit of the StarTAC and even upgraded to the TimePort, another great phone. I had the accessories as well. I love have they carried over the features from their pagers. Simplistic Fun fun!
@user_imuoraH 2022-03-29T22:46:14Z
I just check how much cost used StarTAC in my country and its 250-400$ :O

I haven't yet seen you do a video on the Motorola Dynasty bag phone. I still have mine. Its locked but powers up fine. Loved the 3 Watts of power it had and NiCad camcorder battery.

"to old to be legally activated"
What, is CDMA illegal now?
@user_2791bevets 2022-02-02T00:10:33Z
Yes I remember the StarTAC and the Harlequin edition, which I saw in lots of magazines and a friend’s Dad had one.
@user_1453yreffocseotreb 2022-01-23T23:32:23Z
StarTac and Razr, two best phones I have ever had. Would go back to them if they were updated as is for 5G capability.
@user_8237regnirtsde 2022-01-22T04:14:16Z
Man I loved that phone
@user_2603seahlagameuqirneh 2022-01-08T12:00:56Z
Still keep mine from 98, the 130 version. The V series where also very good but not as good as the first star tac models.
That's why I still like Motorola nowadays they still try to innovate. And that's remarkable.
The watch has a very cool Cartier thing about it..except for that cheesy fake numberpad
@user_90lrigmrots 2022-01-03T01:08:03Z
the rainbow ones threw me off guard for a moment i was thinking "i didnt know there was kids who got their own phones even back then!!"🤣the colors remind me of a 90s v-tech children's toy or something!
@user_72nosredneHnahtE 2022-01-02T22:39:59Z
Was this made in 1995 just released in 1996?
@user_tfiwsrepsac 2021-12-31T16:28:41Z
Lol my step father had a StarTac when I was a kid, I remember thinking it was the coolest thing as it was the first cellular phone I had ever really seen....he carried it in one of those leather hip pouches lol
@user_sakunytraMrepuS 2021-12-09T11:54:00Z
Motorola should make a 2021 version of the StarTAC, like the Razr 5G.
@user_8821llarofecitsuj 2021-12-01T23:14:30Z
I had a StarTac phone. I think Verizon was called… 👉🏾AirTouch (I think 🤔) 🤷🏾♂️☝🏾🧔🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
@user_6478nosnhojnaivaj 2021-11-29T06:49:15Z
Man, the 90s seemed like such an interesting time to be alive
@user_9247renurbtrebor 2021-11-27T14:26:29Z
My first cell phone was a StarTac. Things are different now, except to a connoisseur, one phone looks exactly like the next, and they are almost all covered in cases. Most importantly, in our rapidly evolving world of technological advancements, an entire generation has grown up with mobile devices and they are simply taken for granted, and for those of us that are older, we've had them for twenty years, so the newness has long since worn off. Good memories though. I remember my daughter texting her boyfriend and I thought it was the dumbest thing ever. You can just call him! I was sure texting would never catch on. Of course this is from a guy was sure the internet was a passing fad. After all BBS's had been around for a while, Procomm (modem software) would let us contact anyone, and the internet just wasn't necessary...UNTIL I saw it in action. I was writing HTML for companies a few weeks later.
@user_5652avlisp 2021-11-23T02:43:42Z
This has to be my favourite phone from back in the day, that click when you hung up a call was so satisfying.
@user_777amgineveS 2021-11-15T21:59:07Z
Idk what happened to my last phone of just a year or two ago. How do people hold on to phones from decades ago lol
@user_1260ZASN 2021-11-12T19:32:21Z
I’m glad you’re making those videos. My very first phone was Motorola and my latest phone is Motorola razr. And I’m not changing
@user_TeiddaL 2021-11-09T20:42:17Z
I still use a StarTAC today. GSM versions still work here in the UK. I have every GSM model and a few others. My main one is a 130 with the guts of a M6088 as they get better reception. Managed to track down an original brand new housing for it, network unlocked it and re-celled a few batteries so it's like knew. I actually know StarTACpassion I was speaking with him earlier. I've bought two Lekki editions from him.
And you can still use the StarTAC in the US, just not the Verizon/Sprint models. The 7000g and 8000g can still be used on T-Mobile (until they turn off 2G). They're essentially the 75 and 85 respectivly but run on GSM1900 instead of GSM900. Those models are rare and expensive as Motorola sold them direct to consumer only and not through providers; that's why most models in the US are CDMA/TDMA varients.
And before anybody asks, the other GSM models will not work in the US as they're mostly GSM900, with a couple being GSM1800 and no provider in the US has those bands.
@user_db7424eilliwfilac 2021-11-08T03:47:28Z
I still love the flip phone. I would rather carry one. The big clunky one is getting old.
@user_ynneknnud 2021-11-06T09:10:50Z
I wonder what happened to my star tac. I thought it was soooooo cool.
@user_4055oofnoel 2021-11-02T08:31:15Z
I am a great fan of Motorola mobile phones, pagers and walkie talkies. I am still using my Motorola ROKR E2 and Motorola G 2nd generation smartphone in 2021.

@user_notsserp 2021-10-14T09:19:27Z
But Motorola interface was horrid during the Razer period. Symbian was more user friendly.
@user_9498aktivanynnal 2021-10-11T06:18:12Z
Back in 1996, I was the only kid in my school, hell my entire neighborhood, that had a cell phone. My dad had one assigned from work, but he refused to use it and in protest, let me take it and use it daily. I don't want to say that it was the catalyst of my popularity, but being able to be contacted and the ability to be available 24/7 on a phone was a game changer. I had opportunities to earn money that others did not have as well. I definitely have an appreciation for throwback phones and how they changed communication in our world.
@user_tirBodrahciR 2021-10-03T22:46:52Z

@user_r0rrE-404 2021-09-07T11:58:50Z
What a fantastic video that features my favorite mobile phone company of all time. I too own the smaller version of the StarTAC, in Australia, they were called "StarTAC X" version.
I have it still in my bedside table, refusing to give it up to the second hand market no matter the price. Although it no longer works now a days, it often reminds me of the days when mobile phones... were fun.

That's why I still like Motorola nowadays they still try to innovate. And that's remarkable.

I have it still in my bedside table, refusing to give it up to the second hand market no matter the price. Although it no longer works now a days, it often reminds me of the days when mobile phones... were fun.
